Steel shot vs steel grit: a buyer’s selection guide
Steel shot has rounded particles; steel grit has angular particles. That difference affects how the media acts on a surface. For a purchasing decision, start with the required surface condition, then confirm the media specification and equipment compatibility.

What is the difference?
Steel shot is used for blast cleaning and controlled shot-peening applications. Angular steel grit is used for cleaning and surface preparation before painting or coating. The manufacturer WINOA IKK Japan describes these shapes and applications in its product overview.

1. Define what the next process needs
Give the supplier the component material, the condition before blasting and the next manufacturing step. Ask your process owner to identify the required cleanliness, surface profile and measurement method, along with any limits on dimensional change or visible marking.
For a coating job, include the applicable coating specification. For a specified peening process, provide the approved media requirement. Keep a repeat purchase separate from a proposal to change the process.
2. Check the machine and workpiece restrictions
Record the equipment make and model and the media it is approved to use. Have the equipment or process owner review a proposed change in media type, size or hardness before buying a trial quantity.

Before requesting a trial, agree the representative parts, evaluation quantity, process conditions, inspection method and person responsible for approval. Record the starting condition and required result so both teams can interpret the findings.
